Thank You and Intro

Post by Mivan »

Hello everyone,

Thank you for providing great tools and a forum for feedback and inquiry.

Version Running: V_II Beta - June 20 2024 - X86_64

I went with ShowXpress because I was really looking hard at Sweetlight as it seemed closest to what I had envisioned as I was considering diving in the DMX world and stumbled upon a post stating they were essentially the same... ShowXpress in the USA and Sweetlight in the EU. I have not even tried other DMX software. Though I did look at SoundSwitch, Light Jams, WMX1, Session Buddy/DMXIS, AI LightShow, QLS Plus, and several others.
I chose the Beta version v10/vii/ instead of the stable v9 because I'd rather be on the 1st floor of a new skyscraper being built above me than the top floor of a low-rise building being slated for demolition... and I am not in any particular rush to build a perfected and bullet proof lightshow though would ultimately like to get there.

Hardware: HP Z2 Workstation Win10 i9 10900K @3.70Ghz 32GB w/a Chauvet 1024 for DMX and a Presonus Audiobox USB96 for audio routing.

Background: My only experience with stage lights is from the mid 80's to early 90's using, as I recall, 8 to 16 channel boards with 4 to 8 scene "punch buttons", and less than a couple dozen "cans". Chases were all manual, if you'd even call them such. Things are certainly lightyears ahead of this now days.

I do have significant experience with pretty much everything on a small to mid-size scale for the live audio side of the house. I run Presonus S1 Pro in my studio with a lot of added bells and whistles on which I sound design, produce, mix, master, audio repair, etc. for myself and others.
I also have decades of professional experience with software and troubleshooting systems design and implementation along with project, program, and operations management primarily in IT, Telecom, and Banking sectors. I also have varied related certifications. No, I am not looking for a job, I just thought this information might be relevant to share.

Clearly, I have no information regarding your sprints, punch lists, nor any other potentially relevant details beyond what I've gleaned from perusing interesting posts in the forum. I have not read all of them. However, I thought my perspective and feedback might be appreciated after having worked with VII for a couple dozen hours thus far. For sure I have more to learn. I have not dug into the Boards or Sound2Beat modules beyond a cursory once or twice over.

Crash Report: Only once, while trying to reset the Timeline-> Time Textbox... resulted in a full application freeze then application self-terminated. No blue screen or other OS anomalies noted, I did not reboot, and ShowXpress restarted seemingly fine. I do note all subsequent "New Timelines" created auto sets the time at 0:00:30.0. It does not seem to like modification, though will readily take a delete (occasionally with a bit of delay/stumble) and retyping of a whole string.

Bug Report: I'm not sure I am familiar enough with this software to determine a bug from an intentional feature by design function and/or from user error, though have noted several items of interest, query, and request. I will post these and my other thoughts in their respective forum topics.

Overall Impression: I am quite thrilled and can easily imagine this software being quite amazing in a few more iterations. For a beta version this is already a powerhouse!

Thank you again,
Mivan

Hello,
Thank you very much for this valuable feedback.
We will try to reproduce the problem in TimeLine. If you could post a video showing the problem, it might help us a lot to fix it. In the meantime, we will answer to all your posts.
